STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

ALIGN MAG

The theme for Align Mag Fall 2020 is “Fantasy Issue”. I was assigned the theme Stairway to Heaven and chose to take an abstract approach. I wanted to communicate a hierarchy, movement, and a drastic contrast of light.

STYLING

The styling was very important. I chose the all-white clothing, simple natural makeup, and gold accented jewelry to communicate an organic elegance. I chose the location to contrast the elegance of the model. I also wanted to prioritize drastic contrasts and lighting in this shoot to communicate the heavenly aspect of the prompt.

PHOTOGRAPHY

I decided to use the absence of color in this shoot to amplify the heavenly qualities light and color can provide. I shot in color, but utilized an atmosphere that was very neutral. The post edits I considered in planning were the removal of color in the graffiti on the underside of the bridge as well as the removal of weeds and other nuisances that did not fit my vision. The second location I shot at was the Wayne Morse Courthouse in Eugene. I used this location for detail shots, the stairs, and incredible lighting. I wanted the photos to appear as if they were all shot in the same world although the reality was two very different locations.

ART DIRECTION

The art boarding process helped me to perfect my vision and think about all of the elements working together to execute my vision. I included styling, location, and post edit techniques to translate my vision to both the magazine editor and model.
